CHILDHOOD FEARS

Early in the process, I decided to add a vignette, not only to link the images together but also to give an illusion of a keyhole. I am hoping the vignetting will build an interaction with the audience to have a more intense engagement of looking into a sphere of fear. Many of my works are quite abstracted and need imaginative interrogation to gain understanding.

RATIONALE

This body of work looks at how childhood fears still disturb/haunt us as we grow up. The fear most people have is of growing up and all the ongoing responsibilities that come with it. There is a forever over-hanging anxiety of ongoing knowledge of mortality and how death is always approaching.

The series is set in the physiological space of the night. This is a space where I can almost feel comfort in the fear and a physical change of not being visually present in the dark. It is a time when any physical event or moment that occurs is isolated and requires full attention. I feel this is a direct connection to developing poignant memories and more particularly, fears.

The concept of “CHILDHOOD FEARS” aims to address the themes of mental health and self-identity.

I have incorporated colour to add other layers of meaning underpinning the work. Where blue has strong symbolic connections to mental health while the red palette is indictive of the times ‘trauma’ is associated with fear and self-identity construction. The work has a narrative that will require close inspection.
